The American Psychiatric Association (APA) currently recommends that selection of an antipsychotic should be based on a patient’s previous responses to the drug and its side effect profile. 2 Antipsychotics represent the first-line treatment for patients with Schizophrenia and have been the mainstay treatment since the 1950s. Onset of symptoms typically occurs in late adolescence or young adulthood, with approximately 0.4 to 0.6 percent of the population affected worldwide. 1 Symptoms include positive (i.e., delusions, hallucinations) and negative (i.e., passive/apathetic social withdrawal, blunted affect) symptoms and general psychopathology (i.e., preoccupation, lack of insight, motor retardation). Hopefully someday they have better, more nuanced drugs for insomnia that don’t come with dependence or side effects. Background and Objectives for the Systematic Review Schizophrenia and Related Psychoses If you haven’t tried hydroxyzine, it’s an antihistamine and that could be a good one to take while you come off Seroquel. ![]() Your best bet would probably be to find a another drug for insomnia that is easier to come off and throw whatever helps you sleep at it for the first couple months. You have strong opinions about these meds, as you should cause they are overprescribed and scary, so it would definitely be worth it for you go get off of them. I do feel like I am back to normal, it did take me awhile, and I still deal with insomnia but after a couple months to a year I felt like I had overcome it. That was one of my big motivators cause the idea of being on it forever and needing to always have it was very anxiety inducing. And ya I had heard the same things about people staying on seroquel because of not wanting to withdrawal. ![]() If you live in the US there’s a company called swansons that sells these things for pretty cheap so they are worth a shot. Ya definitely worth trying L theanine and others like skullcap. If there is anyone out there that can share any success and their methods please please please do so! There is no help and I am getting very desperate. I had to terminate my pregnancy because I wasn’t allowed to take any medication to sleep and I feel like taking my own life now. I have tried the natural route, sleep restriction etc and nothing works. There are no success stories anywhere and it is very frightening. If this is you - please share your story. I have hardly heard of anyone who has actually taken these medications and was able to come off them and sleep normally ever again. YES it has destroyed your sleep it is all over the internet! Every single doctor on earth will deny it but for anyone that has used these awful drugs, we know that it is true. All I am reading are posts online asking whether their seroquel/olanzapine use has destroyed their sleep and that they are suffering. I’m really desperate to hear that others have gained back their normal sleeping patterns after discontinuing antipsychotic use. ![]()
